David Burchell is Musical Director of City Choir Dunedin, Dunedin City Organist and Organist and Choir Director of St Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin. He is also organ tutor and graduation organist at the Department of Music, University of Otago, and Senior Organist and Parish Choirmaster at All Saints’ Church. He has recently helped found ‘The Little Box of Operas’, a company specialising in chamber opera, of which he is Musical Director.
He studied at Oxford University and was Organ Scholar and later Assistant Organist at New College, working for six years with the renowned chapel choir. For eleven years he was Organist and Choir Director at St Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin, and since moving to Dunedin in 1999 he has made a considerable impression on the musical life of Dunedin, principally as a choir trainer, organist, piano accompanist and also as an orchestral conductor with the Dunedin Youth Orchestra, Southern Sinfonia and St Kilda Brass. He has performed several times as organ and harpsichord soloist with the Southern Sinfonia and frequently performs as an organ soloist and accompanist throughout New Zealand.
